JCG Board Election – 2024 Candidate Statements
We hope you attend the membership meeting on October 15 at the Mendenhall Valley Library from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. We will be sharing information on voting for members to serve on the JCGA Board of Trustees. The candidates are listed below. This year’s election will take place electronically a week after the meeting. This is also a chance to hear about the garden’s year in review and future events.
John Thedinga
I’ve been a JCG member for nearly 20 years and the president of the board of directors for 15 years. I would like to continue to be a board member next year and help to keep improving the Garden.

For the past 10 years, I have enjoyed gardening at our Community Garden and have been the Activities Coordinator the past 4 years. The position is mainly organizing events and people to help them complete their service hour requirements. In a nutshell, I am invested in helping Garden members and the garden thrive. Thanks for considering me for the upcoming term on the Board.

I was in an advisory position for the 5 years and joined as a board member last year. I have been a garden member since 2014. I really enjoy working in the charity plots and on the compost project and hope to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Thank you for your consideration.
I have served as the secretary of the JCGA Board for the past 10 years and am willing to continue in this role. The community garden contributes so much to those of us who garden there and to the wider Juneau community as well. I believe that it is an important Juneau organization and I am happy to help it grow. Thank you for considering voting for me.
I have been a member of the Juneau Community Garden for at least 25 years and have served in several positions on the board, currently as Treasurer. I think the garden is both a valuable opportunity for individuals and a valuable resource for the Juneau gardening community. I am happy to continue to work to keep the garden growing and evolving and would appreciate being retained on the board.
My passions are gardening and food security. I have been a member of the garden for 20 years and on the board for several. I currently serve as vice president. The garden is a valuable community resource and I want to see it continue to grow and provide food for community members.
Barb Murray is a current board member who was appointed to fill a vacant position after elections last year.
I have served on the Juneau Community Garden Board for the past year and would be interested in continuing for another year. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to develop and organize activities with board members and then to work with garden members to complete them.
Jeri Cary is a current board member who was appointed to fill a vacant position after elections last year.
I’ve been gardening at the JCG since 2020. It didn’t take long to notice that there is a lot of work involved in creating this opportunity for our community. Many of the Board members have been quietly doing this work for years. As a recent retiree, I feel it’s important for me to step up and assist with things that I value. Assisting with the practical and administrative tasks necessary to keeping our Community Garden viable and relevant feels like a constructive way to contribute. I’ve served on the Board for one year, and I would like to continue serving in the year ahead. Thank you for your consideration.
